1/5/2009Ahhhhhh, time to start off another year, back at work, that's greeeeeeeeeaaat.
Some interesting changes that will be happening are...
1) moving to the city! Can't wait, less than a week to go. Should be bodacious.
2) will start studying again, sort of. Gotta finish this one thing that is getting dusty. SQL MCITP 2005. Yikes!
3) exercise mania again. It's been a while, but I really have run out of excuses and really want to get some thorough biking in/around central park this year 10/20/2008Just got back today, after a long week out in Oahu with Erica, Aric and Michelle.
Miki and Joel's wedding and related events were great, and while the weather was rainy on some parts of the week, we got a lot of adventures in and lots of snorkelling.
We stayed at the Ke Iki Bungaloes on the north shore, and got to see the massive waves for part of the week. Dope!
Lots of other cool stuff, would totally recommend going there. 10/5/2008After obviously letting the world know what she can bring to the table (immaturity, small-minded thinking, blatant ignorance, etc), she is lowering the bar for politics of 2008.
OK, so the Obama / Ayers relationship. The Ayers guy, whom I knew nothing about so had to google it, led some radical war-opposition actions during Vietnam. They lit off some bombs in the US back in the day and did some pretty bad things.
The actions of Ayers were definitely bad. But Obama never met him until 20-something years later in a totally unrelated environment: a charitable board for education.
Ayers has moved on, the govt has obviously moved on (Ayers is not in jail, nor was he ever for this), and their workings together had only to do with state/county level education policies.
Way to go Sarah!
6/28/2008So wouldn't it be nice if you voted for someone and then they made decisions that were better for YOU when it mattered?
Or would you prefer that they made decisions because someone invested a lot of money to pay for their advertising and costs during their campaign?
Do you think that cigarettes should have warning labels all over them indicating how bad they are? Or should they have a small little vague text on the side? Skull and cross-bones, or text saying they might be harmful?
See the cigarettes in Europe and rest of world, then see the ones here in the US.
Healthcare. They give bonuses to their internal directors that stamp a certain % of rejections for surgeries that are on wait for physicians. The more they give rejections to, the more bonus they get. Sounds like it should be illegal right? Well not in this country.
OK, so another is that places are still printing all kinds of things they don't need to.
Like hello, EMAIL? PDF? It's picking up, but I love how people have a computer in front of them. They have an instruction manual emailed or downloaded. Then, instead of doing that same thing (sometimes a computer-related task), they go and print out the 50 page manual.
Then, they hold the manual, and read it and do the steps ON THEIR COMPUTER.
And, half the time, they don't bother to print double-sided.
Nice. OK, so go buy a DELL or similar laptop or computer.
First, it's a big cardboard box. OK, that's fine, needs to get there right? Well then open it, and see that everything is molded by this styrofoam stuff. Well OK, but it's not re-usable. So you have this giant pile of un-reusable crap that you just throw out.
Next, there is a 50 page paper manual of how to use the POWER CORD. Come one! At least TRY to save some resources.
Also, try ordering a keyboard from them. They ship you a big box. Inside that box, is another box, and some styrofoam or plastic bubble.
Inside THAT box is the keyboard and some cardboard cushion.
OK, one major example is when you go to buy a quick lunch. Like you buy some chinese food in the city. I got a udon soup somewhere.
There was a big plastic bowl for the soup.
Then the salad that came with it was in this plastic container. Then the drink of course is in a plastic bottle.
When I was done eating, I had all this empty thick plastic stuff. I wanted to at least recycle it. but no, the place didn't recycle, so I had to just throw it out. Also, there were probably 50 people eating at the same time as me. And, there was a line almost out the door. This was one busy spot in the city, where 100 or more others (or maybe a few hundred) were equally busy.
One day. How much plastic got used and thrown out unnecessarily on that ONE day?
Crazy. 6/27/2008OK, so one thing is that I think it's gross that we have such escessive waste in the general availability of food and other products found in the grocery stores.
See how many brands of soda and soft drinks alone. There is usually an entire isle of these. All the same, all have garbage ingredients like high fructose corn syrup. All are heavy and need to be shipped all over the country.
Ever see how many packages of meat are sitting out there? Think they sell all that meat?
Also, sorry but I also don't need twenty brands of toilet paper or napkins.
Also, how many brands of potato chips are there? A whole isle of em. And most if not all are unhealthy.
Go to Europe, see the little convenient but essential stores. They sell you something. You can buy it. Or not. Move on.
5/29/2008
It's wild, but some tribes in the world that have NEVER interacted with modern society. Crazy!
And there we go, destroying rainforests to get some paper and ruin the world. Yayyyy!
